Key Chapter Winner Highlight: University of Alabama

by GOLDEN KEY INNOVATION TEAM

Golden Key International Honour Society, founded on 29 November 1977, is an academic honor society which recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines.

We would like to highlight the University of Alabama Golden Key chapter for being named a 2012-2013 Key Chapter.
During the 2012-2013 academic year, the University of Alabama chapter hosted a Halloween Party and Dessert Tasting for the residents of Hallmark Manor and Tradition’s Way at Capstone Village nursing home.U of Alabama 1 This nursing home is located on the University of Alabama campus so the chapter wanted to have the opportunity to reach out to them to help them feel more connected with the university students. For this event, members hosted a costume contest in which they wore costumes and gave the residents the opportunity to choose who they felt had the best costume. They also listened to music and provided a variety of desserts and treat bags for the residents to enjoy. The event was incredibly successful- chapter members were very pleased with the outcome, as well as the members’ willingness to become involved in the community service event. This event was the first service initiative at the University of Alabama to interact with these residents, and it was apparent that the party made a difference. The chapter is planning on hosting party at another local nursing home so the chapter has the opportunity to reach out to all sorts in the Tuscaloosa area.
The University of Alabama chapters also hosted a Soap for Hope Drive, which collected care packages of bars of soap, washcloths and Ziploc bags to send to people in need in Haiti.U of Alabama 2 The drive, which collected these items for two months, had a tremendous impact on the chapter members, the University community and the recipients of these items. Numerous members arrived early to the chapter’s general meeting in April and stayed late to put together the care packages. The care packages, although minor to many people, were very beneficial to the people of Haiti, and putting together this project not only created awareness of the support that Haiti needs, but also helped to create a strong bond amongst the members of the chapter and the community. Next year the chapter is planning to make this event a collaborative effort within the entire Tuscaloosa community.
Congratulations to the University of Alabama chapter for their dedication to their local and worldwide community, and for being named a 2012-2013 Key Chapter!
